Dental Crown Types

Smile womanWhen you succumb to cavities, a reliable dentist will hopefully catch the decay early enough on for the least invasive treatment possible. If you are going in for checkups every six months, there is a much higher chance of catching cavities early. However, if you ignore your dental health by not brushing your teeth frequently or avoiding regular dental appointments, you could end up with worse decay than just a simple cavity. For deeper dental decay, different types of dental crowns may be the solution.

PFM Crowns

Initially, dental crowns were made from precious metals such as gold and silver. Along the way, different materials were developed in an attempt to offer patients the best of both worlds. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combined metal’s strength with porcelain’s aesthetic advantage. PFM crowns consist of a meticulous layering of materials. There can be a cosmetic drawback to this type of crown, however. The metal base under the porcelain can create the appearance of a black line where the crown blends into the gum tissues. This is a result of the metal edge of the crown.

Better Dental Crown Options

Fortunately, you can avoid black lines from PFM crowns. White porcelain or lithium disilicate crowns are a great alternative to metal crowns. These particular materials provide long lasting durability while still looking like natural teeth. Unlike crowns in the past that were obvious because of the sheen of metal, modern dental crowns are custom shaded to match your surrounding teeth. Not only do they blend in with the rest of your teeth, but they also reflect light much like tooth enamel. To deal with the fact that porcelain and ceramic can’t always endure the crushing pressure that back teeth endure through chewing and grinding.
