Have you ever developed a cavity? If so, you know how uncomfortable tooth decay can be. You may also be aware of the problems that can develop as a result of cavities. But why do we get cavities? What causes tooth decay to form in the first place? Understanding the factors behind a cavity can help you take better care of your teeth and even avoid serious discomfort.
The Layers of Your Teeth
To understand how cavities form you need to understand your tooth structure. Our teeth are coated in a very strong layer of tooth enamel, designed to protect the teeth from damage and bacteria. Beneath the enamel is the dentin, a more sensitive layer that makes up a majority of the tooth structure. When the enamel becomes weakened (often due to poor oral hygiene) or damaged (often due to chips or fractures) then bacteria can reach the dentin and cause decay.
Foods and Drinks
Food and drinks high in sugar and other starches can coat the teeth in sugar. Bacteria can then break down the sugar and food particles, increasing oral acidity and leaving a layer of sticky plaque on the surface of the teeth. Plaque, along with oral acidity, can weaken tooth enamel and make decay more likely. We have a few suggestions for limiting your decay risk:
- Drink more water and cut back on soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks
- Cut back on sugary candy and snacks
- Eat more fresh fruit and vegetable, as well as nuts and dairy products
Poor Oral Habits
If you don’t brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day, then food can remain trapped between teeth and plaque buildup can worsen, increasing the chances of decay forming. However, with proper oral maintenance, and regular six month dental cleanings at the dentist’s office, you can protect your smile from tooth decay.
