Which Kind Of Dentures Do You Need?

engelbergdenturesTooth loss can have a major impact on your smile. Obviously, tooth loss can affect your appearance but losing teeth can also hurt your oral health. You may have trouble eating, speaking clearly, and can develop facial collapse as a result of tooth loss. To avoid these issues and enjoy a full, attractive smile, you need to have your lost teeth replaced with a prosthetic. What kind of dentures does your smile need?

Partial Prosthesis

If you’ve lost multiple teeth spread out across an arch, then the doctor may recommend a partial. The prosthetic consists of replacement teeth and a base designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue. There are metal clasps that attach to the natural teeth and anchor the new teeth in place. The prosthetic may require adjustment or replacement about once every five to ten years as the shape of your mouth changes. We will provide instructions for cleaning and caring for your new replacement teeth.

Full

For patients with total tooth loss we may suggest a full set of dentures. The prosthetic is removable and held in place with suction, or possibly the assistance of a special adhesive. The new teeth are designed to look natural and sit in an acrylic base that looks like gum tissue. As with partials, they will require periodic adjustment as the shape of your mouth changes. You will need to soak and clean them. We will provide instructions for proper care and maintenance of your new teeth.

Implant-Retained Dentures

For a secure prosthetic that doesn’t shift when you eat or speak, we may suggest implant-retained dentures. After placing a series of implants into the jaw, a prosthetic will be snapped onto them. The new teeth are non-removable and the implants stimulate jawbone growth, preventing the loss of jawbone tissue that necessitates periodic adjustment. Your new teeth can be expected to last a lifetime.
