What’s The Difference Between Full And Partial Dentures?

engelbergdenturesLosing several permanent teeth can be a source of embarrassment and also hurt your overall oral health. To correct the problem you may need a dental prosthetic, such as dentures. We actually offer two very different types of denture. What’s the difference between full and partial dentures?

Full Dentures

You are most likely familiar with full prosthetics. They consist of an acrylic resin base designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue. They contain a full set of replacement teeth. A full denture replaces all of the teeth on one or both arches. The prosthetic is held in place with natural suction or possibly the assistance of a special adhesive. We can also place multiple dental implants to secure fixed dentures as well. If you have questions about removable dentures or implant-retained dentures, then please contact our team today.

Partial Dentures

If you have lost several teeth but not enough to necessitate a full prosthetic, we may prescribe a partial. Like the full, the partial contains a base designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue. The prosthetic contains replacement teeth and instead of being held in place with suction or adhesives, actually attach to the remaining natural teeth, securing the prosthetic. As with the full option, we can also secure one using dental implants.

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth

Why is replacing missing teeth so important? Well, the issue is about far more than just esthetic. When you lose a tooth, you may have trouble communicating clearly and often tooth loss can limit what foods you eat, hurting your overall nutritional intake. In addition, gaps in your smile can increase the likelihood of remaining teeth drifting, causing misalignment to occur. In order to enjoy optimal oral health, we urge patients to come to our office and discuss potential options for replacing missing teeth. In addition to full prosthetics and partials, we can also discuss dental bridges, dental implants, and teeth-in-a-day.
