How Do You Diagnose TMJ Disorder?

engelberg-tmd-diagnosisTMJ disorder, also referred to as TMD, develops when a patient suffers from excessive strain on the jaw joints. AS a result of the disorder, people may develop difficulty fully opening and closing their mouths. How do you diagnose TMJ disorder? What warning signs should a person be aware of? Finally, how do you stop jaw joint strain?

Common Warning Signs

Symptoms include pain in and around the jaw or face. For example, you may notice your jaw pops or clicks. You may experience chronic headaches, regular earaches, or pain in your jaw, face, or neck and shoulders. If you experience pain in and around your jaw or face, then we suggest seeing the dentist. The doctor can perform a diagnosis to see if you need treatment for TMD.

Diagnosing the Disorder

The doctor will look for warning signs of strain, including administering the Bio-JVA system to find signs of friction in the jaw joints. Once he has assessed the cause and severity of the problem, he can discuss treatment options.

Often, TMD can lead to the onset of teeth grinding and vice versa. Treatment is essential once a patient begins grinding his/her teeth or clenching the jaw, otherwise damaged teeth can increase the risk of tooth decay, infection, and other oral health concerns.

Treatment Options

Treatment will depend on the cause of the disorder. If your jaw joint strain is caused by misalignment, then the doctor may recommend orthodontics treatment. He may also suggest restorations or tooth replacement. In many cases, an oral appliance, similar to a nightguard, is prescribed. The appliance repositions the jaw to ease strain on the joints.
