Beware the Consequences of Fast Dental Crowns

Smile Crossed ArmsIf you have to have a dental crown put into your mouth, the idea of avoiding the dreaded temporary crown may sound too good to be true. That’s probably because it is. To be fitted for a high-quality dental crown, you have to sport a one-size-fits-all temp crown until your permanent customized restoration is properly fabricated. Yes, temp crowns can feel uncomfortable, cut into your gum tissues a bit, and even fall out before you next appointment. That’s why many dentists become sold on CEREC crowns, or something similar. This technology is impressive in that it allows for dental crown patients to go through an entire crown fitting procedure in one single visit. Dr. Brent Engelberg wants to provide the best in technology to patients, but never at the risk of high quality cosmetic dental work.

Fast-Food Crowns

Dental crowns are usually used to repair tooth fractures or cavities which require a root canal procedure. In these cases of deep dental trauma, same-day crowns simply won’t suffice. At best, a one day crown might work for teeth exhibiting tiny fractures or which are worn down as a result of clenching and grinding teeth. Even then, however, same day crowns don’t provide the same high quality materials, or the meticulous detail which comes from a crown fashioned by a skilled and experienced ceramist.

Go the Distance

The way that CEREC takes away the need for multiple visits to your dentist is that initial impressions of your teeth are immediately input into the CEREC milling machine. In a time frame of generally two hours or less, a customized crown is completely fabricated and strongly bonded to your tooth.  Same day crowns, utilize a 3D camera in order to take images of your tooth, and admittedly, this unique blend of incredible computer software and color-matched materials milled chairside is amazing. But the technology is just not quite there. Truly customized quality which results in a beautiful crown likely to stay intact and in place for many years to come requires more attention to detail.
