An Explanation of Endodontics

Root CanalThere are different names for different types of dentistry. One is endodontics. This dentistry specialty deals with the complex structures that are on the inside each tooth. Each individual tooth in your mouth is made up of nerves, tissues, arterioles, and pulp. A dentist with the ability to provide endodontics to their patients will have received additional training in dental school. Dr. Brent A. Engelberg will describe the reasons for endodontic treatment, and what such a procedure might look like.

Endodontics Explained

Root canal therapy is also known as endodontic treatment. The effort put forth is to try and save as much of the natural tooth as possible in the presence of decay and damage. Some of the various causes for endodontic therapy would be tooth fractures and chipped teeth, dental injuries, oral bacterial infections (cavities) and complete tooth removals. For instance, if a tooth is knocked out on accident, it can sometimes be reattached with the help of root canal therapy.

Endodontic Procedures

When you undergo an endodontic procedure, complete X-rays of the teeth will be taken and examined before the treatment begins. The dentist will want to ensure that the procedure is as comfortable as possible, so a local anesthetic will most likely be administered. The dentist will use something called a dental dam, which is a protective sheet to keep the surgical area free of excess saliva and potential bacterial exposure. Pulp will be removed through an opening that your dentist makes in the tooth. The newly made space will be filled with a biocompatible material that is much like rubber. Cement is applied to the top part of the remaining tooth to ensure that the root canals are completely sealed from further infection. Filling options will be discussed, and a temporary filling may be placed to restore functionality to the tooth while you heal, before a crown or other permanent restoration is put into place.
