5 Facts About Dental Crowns

engelbergcrownAt Glamour Smiles we believe in providing all patients with quality dental restorations. In order to address common oral health concerns and improve the stability and appearance of the teeth, we may suggest placing a dental crown. There are a number of facts about dental crowns you may not be aware of. With both restorative and cosmetic capabilities, a dental crown can improve your smile’s health and beauty.

Facts About Dental Crowns

  1. A porcelain crown can repair both cracked and broken teeth: While dental bonding and veneers can help repair minor chips, a porcelain crown can be used to repair both broken and fractured teeth. The doctor first prepares the teeth by removing a small portion of structure, then he takes impressions to aid in the design and fabrication of the new restoration.
  2. A restoration can match your natural teeth: We create our restorations from porcelain, a lifelike material that is strong and stain-resistant. In order to ensure your new crown blends with your smile the doctor employs the ShadeVision® system, which allows him to shade the porcelain restoration to ensure it matches surrounding teeth.
  3. They can restore a tooth following root canal therapy: A root canal allows a dentist to address dental infections, removing infected tissue before cleaning and filling the tooth with a special restorative material. To complete the procedure the doctor places a restoration over the newly repaired tooth.
  4. You may wear a temporary one during the fabrication process: After preparing and taking impressions there may be a brief period in which you require a temporary while your custom-made crown is being fabricated. However, in some cases we may use CEREC technology to create and place the porcelain crown in a single visit, meaning some placement procedures won’t need a temporary at all.
  5. They can address cases of advance tooth decay: While fillings can repair most cases of tooth decay, a severe cavity may require a more substantial restoration.
