4 Steps To Help Prevent Gum Disease

At our office, we provide treatment to help manage gum disease and protect your smile. However, with the proper steps at home and routine visits with our team, you can actually help prevent gum disease from forming in the first place. Simple dental maintenance, done correctly and daily, can help protect your smile from periodontal problems.

Steps for Gum Disease Prevention

  1. Be Aware of the Warning Signs: You should know the possible indicators of the disease so you can see a dentist promptly. In the early stages, you may notice your gums appear more red than pink. They may also feel sore, swell, or even bleed easily. If you notice changes or discomfort in your gum tissue, then contact your dentist for a thorough exam and diagnosis.
  2. Brush Your Teeth Daily: Often, the disease occurs when plaque buildup leads to inflammation. By taking care of your teeth, you can control the amount of plaque buildup. One way is to brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again before you go to bed. Each session should last two minutes, no less, allowing you to reach every surface of your teeth.
  3. Floss Daily: In addition to brushing, you must floss in order to remove food caught between teeth. A toothbrush may not reach these particles. Flossing can help protect your smile from gingivitis and gum disease by limiting the risk of serious plaque buildup.
  4. See Your Dentist for Cleanings: Even if you brush and floss, you need a routine cleaning to completely remove plaque and tartar from your smile. Cleanings should occur every six months. Patients of all ages, from children to seniors, benefit from routine dental cleanings.
