The Fascinating World of Animal Teeth

DoggyToday is National Puppy Day, so if you are a dog lover, celebrate your pooch. When it comes to doggy dental care, most vets will concur that brushing your dog’s teeth daily is as important as brushing yours twice a day. The same systemic connections resulting from oral infection are suspected in animals. Of course, most animals don’t subscribe to a dental self-care routine, but Chicago suburbs cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent A. Engelberg will share with you that there are some fascinating teeth in the animal kingdom.

A Squid with a Human Smile

You have probably seen images of a squid, or watched one swim around at an aquarium. One type of squid found deep in the ocean is called the Promacthoteuthis sulcus. What’s so amazing about this aquatic resident? His human-like teeth. At least it appears that this squid has a human grin. However, his “teeth” are actually more like lips, concealing a beak underneath which is used to attack prey.

Teeth on the Tip of the Tongue

Still in the ocean, a deep-sea fish called the Dragonfish resides in pitch black waters. Mr. Dragonfish has a mouth full of intimidatingly sharp teeth, though the animal is only about six inches long. The most unique part of the Dragonfish’s dental anatomy is that he grows some of his piercing teeth on the surface of his tongue. Since he can’t see where he lives, these extra choppers probably help with his blind hunting.

Do Snails have Teeth?

You may be surprised to know that snails even have teeth. While it’s true that snails do not actually chew their food, they do have thousands of little teeth in their mouths. The teeth are attached to ribbon-like structures called radulas that these mollusks use to grind up their food for better digestion.
