What do you think is the first impression you make on new people? Perhaps someone notices your beautiful eyes, or your gorgeous, silky hair. Unfortunately, if someone smiles at you, and you smile back with a broken, damaged, crooked, or otherwise unattractive smile, that first impression goes from pleasant to uncomfortable for everyone involved. According to a research study from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) no matter what age you are, the importance of a nice smile remains a high priority in first impressions.
Importance of Attractive Smiles
Any type of cosmetic surgery has both gained popularity over the years, and maintained a reputation of being a frivolous pursuit of the rich and famous. The truth of the matter, however, is that your smile is a worthy investment, and fixing it up is no different than making sure your home has “curb appeal.” No matter how many years have passed, the way anything looks has a heavy bearing on interpersonal relationships. In fact, according to a survey question issued by the AACD, 45 percent of those questioned believe that their smile is their most attractive feature, regardless of how old they are. Bodies pale in comparison with only 10 percent believing that their overall physical state is more important than the way their smile appeals to others.
Men are Almost as Interested in Smiles as Women
Many of the participants of the survey said they were willing to make a monetary investment in their smiles. In fact, over three-quarters of those questioned said maintaining a more youthful appearance through their grin would be money well spent. Not surprisingly, more women than men are willing to spend money on their smiles, but the gap is closing (in some cases, literally). About 84 percent of women will invest financially in their smiles, while 75 percent of men will do the same. The age group most likely to spend money on their appearance is 30-39.
