Glencoe Cosmetic Dentist Defines Craze Lines

Smile Close Up PrintCrazy is one of those words that can have the most negative or positive connotations. Someone might describe someone else as crazy with a look of fear in their eyes, and you’ll be certain to steer clear. Or they may say, “she’s so crazy!” with a gleam of amusement and the intention of painting the picture of someone that’s spontaneous, hilarious, and unique. Craze lines are a dental condition that would be more on the negative, if interpreting meaning. However, you don’t hear of them as often as more familiar terms like cavities, gum disease, fillings, and root canals. Your Glencoe cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg will explain what causes craze lines, and how to proceed in repairing them if you are avoiding smiling because of them.

What Are Craze Lines?

Craze line fractures are shallow, and occur in your tooth enamel. They aren’t necessarily visible, but if you are a tobacco user or coffee drinker, you may end up with stains in these vertical lines that make them visible and aesthetically disconcerting. They shouldn’t be detrimental to your dental health, as the cracks aren’t deep enough to allow bacteria through. However, fixing a visible craze line issue might not be as simple as teeth whitening. For severe craze lines, porcelain veneers may be a necessary treatment to completely cover over the fractures.

Avoiding Craze Lines Like Crazy

Do you treat your teeth like delicate parts of your body? Or do you abuse your smile, assuming that it’s never let you down, and remains strong as stone? Teeth are definitely up for taking a beating on the best of days, but that doesn’t mean you should put them to the test. Treat your teeth like any other part of your anatomy that you’d like to stick around for years to come. Pencils and pens are for writing, not nibbling. Catch balls with your hands, and not your face (if possible). Just say no to oral piercings that will clink against your enamel until it gives way. If you have a bruxism (teeth grinding) habit, seek a nightguard to combat damage. And for goodness sake, your teeth are not designed to open bottles or crack nuts. You have tools in your kitchen for those purposes.
