Do you have a Date with Sedation? What to Eat?

EggsCosmetic dental procedures carry a range of emotions from excitement and anticipation to anxiety. Any procedure that might bring about feelings of bodily discomfort are bound to make you feel at least a little nervous. Fortunately, we offer a variety of sedation options that can make your experience with Northwest Chicago cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg, like a dream. You may wonder, though, if there are any special dietary concerns if you have a sedation dentistry appointment ahead of you.

Individualized Dietary Concerns

Sedation is designed to bring about a peaceful and pleasant oblivion, but for some patients, having sedation introduced to their body brings up a whole new list of worries. For example, if you have blood sugar issues (hypoglycemia or diabetes) you might be concerned about handling the hours of fasting prior to the appointment. Your specific situation should be discussed with Dr. Engelberg at your initial consultation. As long as you’re specific with your health history, we can come up with a safe and effective plan to ensure that all of your needs are being met.

Keep it Light

You’ll be provided with very specific instructions regarding when to begin your pre-op fast from food and drink prior to any dental surgery. Can you eat absolutely anything for your “last supper?” Most people find that eating a fairly light and easily digestible diet for a day or two before a dental sedation appointment will help prepare your body a little bit better. If you are extremely anxious, eating heavy, large meals can bring about gastric distress when you come in for your appointment. To avoid an upset stomach on top of everything else, plan a menu for a couple of days that includes light, soft meals such as toast, bananas, cereal, eggs, oatmeal, rice, or plain pasta. These are generally the sorts of foods you’ll want to eat for a day or two after sedation and surgery, as well.
