Denture Loss Scenarios: Consider Implants

10-29-14 Denture LadyThere’s no reason why you shouldn’t get dentures if that’s what you want. However, it’s a dentist’s job to inform patients as to the advantages of new treatments which can make life easier and more comfortable. From a functional standpoint, dentures leave a lot to be desired. And while they’ve come a long way aesthetically, they don’t look as natural as other options. Perhaps the worst part about dentures is that they’re not fixed, which means they can easily be lost. Elk Grove cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg will share unfortunate scenarios which could have you ditching the dentures in search of implants.

Scenario #1: Lost in the Hospital

Dentures aren’t recommended during surgery. Since you need to have a clear airway, and your anesthesiologist and doctor need access through your mouth to ensure your comfort and safety, dental prosthetics are simply hazardous to keep in for an operation. However, when your dentures are out of your control, and you’re in a busy place like a hospital, the potential for misplacement is there. Next thing you know, you are healing from surgery and you have to deal with getting new dentures at the same time.

Scenario #2: Dumped in the Garbage

Perhaps your dentures have been getting loose and uncomfortable as your jawbone density has diminished over the years. You want to enjoy a nice piping hot bowl of tomato soup and you’d prefer to do so without your dentures, so you take them out. You get caught up in a television show, fall asleep for a nap, and then when you wake up you realize you still need to clean up. Completely forgetting you’d wrapped your dentures in a paper towel, you throw them in the garbage, take the trash out to the dumpster just in time for the trash truck to come, and don’t realize any of this until you get back inside. So long, dentures.

Scenario #3: My Dog Ate my Dentures

Typically, you’ll take your dentures out at night to sleep safely and comfortably. You may stick them in a glass of denture cleaner, or possibly just place them on the end table next to you. It’s lights out for you, but your new puppy is feeling wide awake as he takes your dentures in his mouth, figuring they are his new chew toy. Of course, these specific scenarios don’t happen every day, but you can see how such accidents add yet another advantage to secure dental implant retained dentures.
