Prep “less” Porcelain Veneers: An Actual Case

Smiling at work GlassesThere are certain dental procedures which demand patience. Rushing means a lack of quality. Any cosmetic dentist worthy of improving your smile will not cut corners. That said, innovations have allowed major time improvements on certain dental procedures. Take minimal prep, prepless or prep “less” veneers as an example. The procedure has become so fine-tuned that incredibly strong and aesthetically beautiful results are now possible in a fraction of the time it once took for this degree of quality. Dr. Brent Engelberg is a cosmetic dentist in the Northern Chicago suburbs area who recently co-authored an article with Brad Jones, FAACD for the May issue of Spectrum dialogue on this very topic. Today’s blog will be the first in a series highlighting a prepless veneer case.

Thinner Material for Less Prep

Veneers called e.max are gorgeous and extremely thin at .5mm to 2mm. However, improvements have been made to thin them out even more to .3mm and thinner. Whether or not you qualify for minimal prep veneers is a case-by-case decision, but the less tooth structure lost, the healthier and more long lasting your dental procedure will be. Making these changes creates an ultra-conservative approach with a stunningly beautiful result.

Case Study

A 20 year old female patient was viewed for a case study in which she desired a more uniform look to the height/width of teeth. The patient was unhappy with her larger central incisors among other symmetrical issues with her smile. The procedure started with a pre-op cast and vacuum former to remove any tooth structure outside of the arch form. This reduced the need for removing substantial tooth enamel to make room for .3mm depth of the veneers. Anesthetic was administered to the patient for her comfort.
