Prep “less” Porcelain Veneers: An Actual Case, Part 3

Dr. Engelberg e.maxThe third part of our series on prepless porcelain veneers will highlight the final phase of an actual case study from Dr. Brent Engelberg (jointly written with Brad Jones, FAACD). The full article was published in the May issue of Spectrum dialogue.

An Expert Team

As we have discussed, the thinness of the IPS e.max Opal 2 porcelain veneer restorations allowed minimal prep on some teeth and no prep at all on others in the case of a young patient with unusually small incisors. One of the most important parts of a quality porcelain veneer procedure is realistic and symmetrical contouring and shaping. The technical intricacies of this process fall on both the dentist and the ceramist. This is why finding a dentist who has procured a solid relationship with a meticulous and experienced ceramist is imperative when you opt for porcelain veneers.

Flawless Translucence

Along with the ultra-thin material used for the porcelain veneers in this case, special care went into ensuring the light reflective properties of the material by including compounds such as diamonds. Human teeth are translucent. Achieving a similar look makes the difference between a lively, youthful, vibrant smile and a dull, fake looking grin. The ultimate goal in this case (and all of Dr. Enbelberg’s porcelain veneer cases) was to provide the patient with a smile that no one could tell came from cosmetic dental labor. The material is not only carefully crafted, but also polished and glazed for shine. Different colors and materials were used to simulate the depth of a realistic smile, since natural smiles are not all one solid color. Meanwhile, the shape of the veneers was very important to ensure that the discrepancies in incisor sizes were no longer an issue for the patient.
