Porcelain Veneers: Second Best to a Natural Smile

Older Man SmilePorcelain veneers have earned their reputation as a versatile cosmetic dental procedure often thought of as a “smile makeover. Popular dental veneers are designed to cover over flaws in your smile. The porcelain discs are wafer-thin shells which are usually made out of translucent and durable porcelain. The materials to make veneers have come a long way in providing an amazingly similar look and feel to natural teeth. Northbrook cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg will tell you that porcelain veneers can provide you with a beautiful and long-lasting smile which can fortunately be cared for just like your natural teeth.

Brush your Veneers

Dental grade adhesive has been developed and improved over the years, which is a good thing since veneers initially only lasted for a few hours at a stretch. These days, veneers are semi-permanently bonded to your teeth. You don’t necessarily need to take special care with your veneers once the adhesive has chemically reacted with your dental anatomy. Just as with your teeth, you should avoid trauma, be careful not to chew on non-food items or food which is too hard, and be sure to practice good oral hygiene twice a day. Continue to brush, but feel free to ask Dr. Engelberg for a recommendation of a minimally invasive ADA-approved toothpaste. This will help ensure that your veneers do not end up with visible surface scratches.

Floss as Always

You can floss teeth fitted with veneers just as you would your natural pearly whites. Many of us are tempted to skip flossing on a regular basis, but try to avoid this bad habit. Porcelain veneers can make your teeth more susceptible to periodontal disease and tooth decay. Flossing helps you reach parts of your teeth which your toothbrush might miss. If you want to go the extra mile, rinse with a germ-killing mouthwash, but make sure that it is alcohol-free.
