Can Drug Interactions Ruin your Dental Implants?

Jaw GuyAs incredibly far as we’ve come in medical advances, there are still many unknowns. The more medications and procedures which are fine-tuned and offered to the general public, the more chance there is that we might have detrimental interactions. One new interaction, as Rolling Meadows cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg will share, is an unfortunately negative clash between drugs commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety, and dental implants.

SSRIs Could Weaken Bones

According to the International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have the potential to decrease bone formation and heighten the risk for bone fractures. These drugs are the most widely prescribed class of medication for the treatment of depression. The research study investigated the association between SSRIs and the risk of failures in osseointegrated implants. Data was shared in a paper titled: “SSRIs and the Risk of Osseointegrated Implant Failure — A Cohort Study.”

Research on Interactions

Recently published in the OnlineFirst portion of the IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research (JDR) the paper was written thanks to a team of expert researchers from East Coast Oral Surgery, Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. The clinical research was conducted on patients who had received dental implants from January 2007 to January 2013. A total of 490 patients who had a collective 916 dental implants were questioned and examined. A small sampling (51 patients) regularly ingested prescribed SSRIs. The patients were followed between three and 67 months of follow-up, a markedly higher rate of dental implant failure was seen in the SSRI patients. To avoid issues, patients are strongly encouraged to bring a thorough list of medications they take when they go in for any dental surgery consultation.
