Uneven Gums? Contouring is Possible

Gingival tissues (AKA gums) offer more than just protection for the roots of your teeth. Your gums are a frame for your beautiful smile. Some people are born with uneven gums or an overabundance of tissues. Gum tissue inequities result in uncomfortable feelings over the appearance of your smile. Feeling good about your teeth and gums is an important part of self-confidence, so there’s no wonder that many patients opt for cosmetic contouring when they feel like their gums don’t look quite right. Evanston cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent A. Engelberg, will share more about the cosmetic procedure known as gum contouring.

Be Happy with your Smile

If you were born with an excess of gum tissue, this can give an appearance of small teeth that look almost child like. Your gums might also be distracting to others when you smile. Have you ever witnessed someone smiling while trying to keep their mouth closed, or is this something that you do? Feeling good about the way your smile appears is an essential element in a higher quality of life. With gum contouring procedures, lasers are used so that excess tissue can be easily removed with precision to unveil an even, well-proportioned smile.

Gum Contouring Details

When your gums are set too high, they make your teeth appear larger. This is generally related to gum recession, which is often seen in patients with long term periodontal disease. The concerns with gum recession are not only cosmetic. When gum tissue is infected, it shrinks back from teeth and can expose the dental roots. If your roots are directly attacked by bacteria, this can lead to a need for endodontic procedures (AKA root canals). Potential tooth loss is also a possibility. In the case of gum recession, contouring may be recommended in addition to other periodontal therapies, such as regenerative procedures, periodontal pocket reduction and crown lengthening.
