Strawberries
Strawberries contain malic acid, which has been shown to remove stains on teeth. Some people mash a few strawberries into a paste, mix with baking soda and apply it to their teeth. The addition of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) should balance out the natural acids in strawberries. However, if the word “acid” concerns you, you’re on the right track with your assumption. Some surface discoloration can be removed with this method, but you are risking the integrity of your tooth enamel with a home remedy such as these used too often. Be cautious and use your homemade strawberry paste no more than once a week.
Bananas
The inner side of a ripe banana peel rubbed on teeth every day for two minute spurts (prior to brushing your smile) could possibly whiten your teeth slightly. Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and manganese have the potential to reduce stains without the acid dangers of the above mentioned strawberries. So, if you want to give this one a try, it certainly couldn’t hurt, as long as you’re aware that you might not see any noticeable results unless you consult with Dr. Engelberg for your professional whitening options.
