Could Red Wine Hold the Key to Better Dental Health?

Regarding red wine and dentistry, the obvious is true: the tannins in wine stain teeth. That’s the bad news. However, red wine may hold some positives in terms of other facets of your dental well-being. If you enjoy a nice glass of red wine when you get home from work, or over a fine meal, you can take precautions for teeth staining while also potentially staving off cavities.

Lowering Cavities with Wine?

A new research study has focused on properties in both red wine and grape seed extract as having the potential to prevent cavities. The compiled data was published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Led by M. Victoria Moreno-Arribas, the hypothesis was based on the prevalence of cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth loss on a global scale. Shockingly, these bacterial infections appear to afflict approximately 60 to 90% of people worldwide. Current oral hygiene practices have come a long way, but the benefits are still limited. Fortunately, it appears that the high concentration of polyphenols in grape seed extract and wine can prevent bacterial growth. Perhaps these compounds will become a part of future oral hygiene products.

Enjoying Wine without the Stains

If you enjoy red wine, there are ways to indulge without as many heavy stains on teeth. Ever try sipping your wine through a straw? Sure, it’s not as romantic, but if you can shift your perception and learn to appreciate ingesting wine in this way, you can bypass your front teeth and avoid stains. You may also keep seltzer or club soda on hand. The bubbles in teeth will loosen immediate stains if you drink the beverage in between sips of wine. If you’re at a party and enjoying a nice Merlot, Pinot Grigio, or Cabernet, step into the bathroom every now and then and wipe your teeth with a clean tissue. There are even portable wine wipes manufactured specifically for that purpose.
