Which Denture Is Right For Your Smile?

According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, by age 74 over 26% of adults have lost all of their teeth. In order to address advanced or total tooth loss, we may suggest a prosthetic. Which denture is right for you? Can you take steps to protect your smile from tooth loss?

What Factors Lead to Tooth Loss?

Injury can lead to tooth loss. Teeth can become lost due to untreated dental infection or abscess as well. But the most common cause is advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis. This stage of the disease dissolves the connective tissues between your teeth and gums. The teeth become loose and eventually, lost. As we grow older, our risk of tooth loss, and our risk of periodontal disease, increases.

Partial Dentures vs Full Dentures

We have two different dentures that can address two different stages of tooth loss. A partial is prescribed when you’ve lost several teeth spread out across the arch, but not enough to warrant a full denture. The prosthetic has a gum-like base, replacement teeth, and metal clasps that attach to the natural teeth and anchor the new ones in place.

A full denture also has an acrylic base designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue, as well as a full row of teeth. The prosthetic doesn’t use metal clasps, instead the prosthetic is held in place with natural suction.

Preventing Tooth Loss

You can absolutely take steps to reduce the risk of missing teeth and we urge you do so. First, always make sure you take time to brush and floss your teeth daily. We also suggest seeing the dentist every six months. The doctor can monitor your smile and recognize the warning signs of trouble, addressing periodontal disease or cavities before they pose a risk to your smile’s stability.
