What’s The Difference Between a Crown And Veneer?

As part of our approach to cosmetic dentistry we offer restorations that change the shade and shape of the teeth. Porcelain veneers can be used to address multiple issues with your teeth’s appearance. How does this dental restoration differ from dental crowns? When should you consider a veneer and what does placement involve?

Veneers

These are very thin shells of porcelain that are placed onto the front of the teeth, altering the teeth’s appearance. We can use them to address a number of different issues, including:

  • Discoloration
  • The appearance of minor misalignment
  • Misshapen/damaged teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Placement involves preparing the teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel. Detailed impressions are then taken and used by a dental lab in the fabrication of the restorations. During a second visit, we will make any necessary adjustments before placing the restoration using a powerful bonding agent. With proper care and attention, your new restorations can last for decades.

Dental Crowns

Crowns require the loss of more natural tooth structure. We can also use them to address esthetic issues, but they are mainly employed to address advanced decay, infection, chips, or dental fractures. We actually use the same porcelain material in crowns and veneers, as porcelain is durable, lifelike in appearance, and stain-resistant.

Which One is Best for Your Smile?

If you’re looking for a cosmetic solution to permanent stains or issues with the shape of your teeth, we may suggest veneers. If you have problems with the function of your teeth, such as a decayed or damaged tooth, then we will recommend a dental crown. If you have any questions about our cosmetic treatments, then please contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
