How Do They Work?
The implant portion acts as a new tooth root and is surgically inserted into the jawbone. After a healing period, the bone and implant post bond. At this point, a restoration is added to the post to acts as the visible portion of the tooth. The replacement tooth then looks and acts like a natural one.
Who Qualifies for Dental Implants?
Obviously, the patient in question should have lost one or more teeth. However, patients also need enough jawbone tissue available to support the new tooth. Otherwise, bone grafting may be necessary. In addition, the patient should be free of periodontal disease, as the advanced stage of the disease can lead to implant failure.
What are the Advantages Over Bridges or Dentures?
Bridges are held in place with dental crowns and dentures with natural suction, but implants are fixed in place with a post that acts as a root. This stimulates the growth of jawbone tissue, preventing the jaw from changing shape over time. As a result, they can last a lifetime while bridges require replacement every 10 to 15 years and dentures every 5 to 10 years. They also look natural and allow you to eat as you did prior to losing your tooth/teeth. If you have any questions about addressing tooth loss then contact our office today. We can examine your smile and see if this is the bets choice for replacing your missing teeth.
