Fact or Fiction: Mercury Poisoning is a Valid (and Dangerous) Concern
Fiction: The truth of the matter is, more mercury is released from removing a mercury-containing amalgam filling then you will be exposed to if you just keep it in your mouth. When we replace metal fillings, we require isolation using a rubber dam, Isolite system, or scavenger system. This keeps mercury vapors from being inhaled. There is also a risk of swallowing pieces of the old fillings. However, mercury is low on the list of concerns. To put things in perspective, dentists used to mix mercury containing metals with their bare hands. No known health issues resulted.
Fact or Fiction: Dr. Engelberg Offers Amalgam and Composite Fillings
Fiction: Dr. Engelberg has not placed an amalgam filling for over 10 years, but this is only because of his commitment to having dental restorations with high quality and cosmetic appeal. An incorrectly placed composite resin filling is potentially much more damaging than an amalgam filling. Tooth decay and tooth sensitivity are consistent issues if you opt for a dentist who is not meticulous in his or her restorative work on patients. Dr. Engelberg is committed to providing you with the healthiest, safest, and most attractive dental work, so his plan will usually be a nice tooth-colored filling, expertly placed.
