A Toothache Education

Aches and pains can occur on any part of our bodies, both inside and out. You may weather your pain like a trooper, preferring to try and let your body run the course of whatever is necessary to heal itself. Or you may prefer to pop over-the-counter pain killers to offer you temporary relief. If you have a toothache, you may wonder if this is the first sign of something serious. Discomfort in your mouth can come from a variety of sources: infection, injury, decay. Are you prepared to think fast if you find yourself with a nagging toothache?

Tooth Decay and Gum Disease

A dull ache or a sharp pain – either one qualifies for the title “toothache.” When you notice marked soreness in a particular spot in your mouth, it’s time to self-assess the possible source. Are you overdue for a checkup? If so, you may wonder if tooth decay is causing the discomfort. Gum disease is another potential source, as bacteria bring about inflammation that can create a feeling akin to a toothache, even if the source is not directly a tooth. Periodontal disease originates as plaque and tartar buildup along your gumline. Fortunately, if one of these things is the source of your ache, you are likely to find that the pain depletes quickly with effective treatment.

More Toothache Facts

When infection in a tooth is not treated, it can spread into your periodontal ligaments. Periodontal pockets are a common side effect of severe gum disease (periodontitis). When food, bacteria, and any other debris settle into the pocket, you can end up with a tooth abscess. This usually appears much like a pimple, but can be extremely painful. If your toothache is accompanied by cold-like symptoms, you could be mistaking oral pain for sinus pain. If your upper molars are the teeth in question, you could very well have sinusitis and should seek the attention of your general physician.
