Dr. Jennifer Mullarkey recently returned from a trip to southeast Africa to help create a dental volunteer program. Dr. Mullarkey accomplished so much during this trip, bringing vital dental care to patients in need and assessing the need for dentistry in Malawi communities. She brought the same level of care and attention to patients thousands of miles away as she does for the patients in our office.
Access Health Africa
Working with Access Health Africa, Dr. Mullarkey helped start a dental volunteer program. She travelled to a number of different villages in Malawi to assess their dental health and the access they have to dental treatment. She found many villages didn’t have a dentist at all, while the ones that did still lacked crucial supplies and resources to treat common dental issues, such as decay or infections.
Working with Student Volunteers
In addition to assessing the needs of the people in Malawi, she also worked with four volunteer dental students from UNC at Bwaila Hospital in Malawi. Together they performed 153 dental extractions in only 6 hours, bringing relief to people suffering from advanced decay, dental infections, and other issues.
Hopes for 2017
Dr. Mullarkey has already scheduled her return in 2017, and hopes to bring more dentists with her to provide essential treatment in rural villages, as well as the Dzalaka refugee camp, which houses refugees from the Congo, Rwanda, and Somalia.
