Are you Ready for a Dental Emergency?

Dental EmergencyAccidents happen, and sometimes they result in injuries. The part of your body which is injured can be a part of the decision of what to do about your situation. Extreme injuries to your teeth and gums are not something that should be simply watched. However, they may not be appropriate for the regular ER, either. Highland Park cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg, suggests you educate yourself in advance regarding dental emergencies. After all, you may have the wherewithal to think on your feet if one should ever happen to you.

Broken Teeth

Breaking teeth can seem like a nightmare. Some injuries can be hidden. Others elicit only sympathy. If you go out to do errands on crutches or with a cast on your arm, you won’t be putting anyone off. However, if you grin at the cashier taking your money at the store and she sees broken teeth smiling at her, she’s more likely to make a judgment than feel sympathy. Dental injuries that compromise your teeth mean that you will most likely want to act quickly on both the healing front, and the cosmetic/restorative front.

Completely Detached Teeth

When you lose an entire tooth, you may have an excellent chance of having it re-implanted. All you have to do is find it. However, don’t waste hours on your hands and knees, searching for your lost tooth in a big field of tall grass. Getting to an emergency dentist within an hour with your dislodged tooth is essential. Be sure to only hold your tooth by the crown (top). You can rinse it gently, being careful not to dislodge any attached tissues. Store your detached permanent tooth in a small container of milk, Gatorade, or salt water to keep it moist. With calm, cool, and quick action, Dr. Engelberg just may be able to return your tooth to its socket.
