Cool Down without Chipping Teeth

IceCubesAccidentally chipping a tooth is not the worst thing that can happen to your dental health, but it’s still not desirable. That’s why cosmetic dentists have a variety of options to repair damaged teeth. Of course, the ideal situation is prevention. One of the most common ways that people damage their smiles (especially during warm weather) is chewing on ice. If you have wiled your summer away downing drinks full of ice and then chomping down on the cubes that remain after the liquid has been swallowed, Lincolnshire cosmetic dentist, Dr. Brent Engelberg, urges you to break the habit instead of your teeth.

Double Whammy

The problem with certain iced beverages (sodas, sugary juices, punches) is their the acidic nature to begin with. Couple this with the reaction of the sugar which feeds bacteria and creates more acid, and you have softened tooth enamel less capable of protecting teeth. Then, when you crunch down on that hard ice, cracks and chips are much more likely because the normal protection of your teeth has been compromised. Additionally, extreme temperatures make any metal fillings in your mouth expand and contract, also leading to cracks. When in doubt, stick to a nice cold bottle of water and spare your teeth the danger.

Treating Ice Damage

If you do crack a tooth as a result of chewing on ice cubes, contact  Dr. Engelberg as soon as possible. After a thorough examination, you may opt for a tooth-colored filling or crown. If your roots are damaged from the crack, a root canal could be necessary. For cracks or chips on your most visible teeth in the front, dental bonding or porcelain veneers might be the best solution to cover up noticeable flaws.
